I wanted to capture the bold, yet delicate beauty of magnolia in this painting. I used lots of layers to build up the subtlety of colours. Applying heavy, bold brush strokes along with a palette knife gives the painting lots of texture and draws you in to take a closer look. Muted tones alongside bright pops of colour, bring a unique element to this artwork.

This painting began its creation outside, next to my magnolia tree. I took inspiration from a group of flowers that were begging to be painted. It's amazing how many more colours can be captured when painting from life. The final layers of texture were added back in my studio where I had access to all my supplies.
