This magnolia study was painted directly from life in my garden — while my son watered the plants around me. It was one of those unexpectedly peaceful moment. The piece is soft yet striking, with deep blues and greens layered with pale greys and soft whites. I used a technique called sgraffito to carve into the surface and reveal the shapes of the leaves, then built up thick texture in the petals for contrast. If you look closely, you’ll see gentle washes of green layered underneath — like the memory of light filtering through branches. It’s a quiet painting, but full of depth.
