The magnolia tree in my garden has become a quiet muse. I first brought it home from the bargain section of a garden centre, not knowing what its flowers would look like. Over the years, it’s grown and surprised me with its delicate beauty — every spring I get to watch the buds swell and open into luminous blossoms.

I painted this study directly from life, sitting in my garden as the spring sunlight lit up the petals and leaves. The palette of soft blues and greens, with airy highlights, captures that fleeting moment of light dancing across the magnolia.

Thick, textural layers of oil paint were built up in two stages, giving the surface a tactile quality that invites you to lean in and notice the brushstrokes. This is a painting you can enjoy both from across the room and up close, where the details reveal themselves.
