This painting began with a vase of sweet peas freshly picked from my garden — wild, fragrant, and a little chaotic. I placed them in a cut crystal glass, but they had no interest in behaving. That mix of elegance and unruliness is exactly what inspired this piece. I grow these every year from seeds and they’re always my favourite. In this painting, I wanted to honour the way they grow: soft but bold, delicate but untamed. Using expressive brushwork and abstracted petal shapes, I let the flowers take centre stage without needing to be perfectly defined. The result is full of movement, memory, and personality.
